In this landmark of Neoclassical painting from the years immediately preceding the French Revolution, David took up a classical story of resisting unjust authority in a sparse, frieze-like composition. The Greek philosopher Socrates (469–399 B.C.) was convicted of impiety by the Athenian courts; rather than renounce his beliefs, he died willingly, discoursing on the immortality of the soul before
Antiochus and Stratonica
Date: 1774

The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis
Date: 1818-1818
Bonaparte Crossing the Great St. Bernard
Date:1805
Diana and Apollo Piercing Niobe’s Children with their Arrows
Date: 1772
Portrait of Napoléon from David’s “Coronation of the Emperor and the Empress”
Date:1808

A landmark of European portraiture that asserts a modern, scientifically minded couple in fashionable but simple dress, this painting was nonetheless excluded from the Salon of 1789 for fears it would further ignite revolutionary zeal. Technical analysis has revealed that a first iteration excluded the scientific instruments and would have been a far more conventional portrait of a wealthy, fashio
David’s role in the French Revolution and service to Napoleon forced the artist to go into exile in Brussels following the emperor’s defeat at Waterloo in 1815. This portrait, one of the first that he painted of the city’s émigré, imperial aristocracy, represents General Gérard, a highly decorated commander of the French army during both the Revolutionary and Napoleonic regimes. David seems to mak

This sheet is a compositional study for The Lictors Bringing Brutus the Bodies of His Sons (Musée du Louvre, Paris), which Jacques Louis David painted on the eve of the French Revolution and exhibited shortly after the fall of the Bastille in 1789. The subject, drawn from Roman history, found great resonance in the context of contemporary events. The canvas depicts an episode from the life of Luci

This highly finished drawing is a study for David's Death of Socrates (31.45), which hangs in the Metropolitan's European Paintings Galleries. The painting depicts the philosopher in prison in 399 BC.

This hand-colored caricature print represents the English army in the form of jugs, being led by George III in the form of a pitcher. Although the name of the printmaker is not known, the design is credited to the history painter, Jacques Louis David. It is one of two caricatures attributed to David; both were the result of a commission from the Committee of Public Safety in the fall of 1793.
Mars Being Disarmed by Venus and the Three Graces
Date: 1824
Saint Roch Interceding with the Virgin for the Plague-Stricken
Christ on the Cross
The Lictors Bring to Brutus the Bodies of His Sons
Date: 1789
Andromache Mourning Hector
Homer and Calliope
Date: 1812
The Intervention of the Sabine Women
Date: 1799
